I know i haven’t been around this blog of late, i haven’t neglected it……… just life diverts your attention sometimes to other things that warrant greater focus!

My life is what it is and i give thanks for all my families and friends, hardships come to all of us and i am indeed experiencing a personal struggle of injustice myself, however i thank God for the genuine and real people that he brings into my life , that no matter how many horrible and mean people exist, there are selfless and passionate individuals that are willing to stand for what is true and what is right!

I know my blog is relates to my art, though this is not the first time i have diverted things from my art in order to draw attention to matters pertaining to the diverse nature of our life here on earth! Anyway Art is the stuff of life and vica versa!

Despite the over whelming evidence that we as humans, irrespective of our racial heritage, have at varying degrees - taken so much from the earth and robbed our brothers and sisters at home and across the globe of dignity, culture and respect, it still astounds me to the levels that a unconscionable mind can transgress and cause hardship and pain to others!

We certainly have learnt nothing in the span of earths history, we still seek to rob, steal, break, deny and destroy all that is beautiful and true, we wage war, subjugate, suppress, lie and manipulate lives and situations for selfish gain. In the face of our eroding human condition, sinful heart, we hear the groaning and travailing of a dying earth and yet persist in our vain addictions to consumption, image and status - we are our own worse enemy indeed!

I say we, for not one of us can detach ourselves from the solutions that beckon us, no old testament prophet removed themselves from the prophecy of coming judgement and often went into slavery along side their own people! So i include my self in the mix and point no fingers without my self being pointed at aswell!

I have been dealt harshly of late and have not received an honest and fair treatment in the hands of those that should serve my interests best, those that are professional would rather hasten my exit from the context i will not speak in detail of here, they wish to have me dealt with deceitfully with as little fan fair as possible and instead eradicate a symptom instead of focus on the cause and in turn cure to my dilemma!

What has motivated this post is not my own trials, though no doubt they serve as a catalyst here, is that i received a email that just moved and enraged me and rose emotion in my self and what else can i do but to spread the news of such ludicrous activity!

I know the world suffers and much has and is taking place right now that wreaks of injustice…… though if i can raise awareness of one thing perhaps it can lead to many things! And spur all of us to think beyond ourselves, even in our hard times!

The following is a email i received this morning!

Subject: URGENT: Construction to begin at burial site tomorrow morning I am writing you because we are trying to get the word out about a struggle on Kaua’i. Can you please pass this on? A wealthy California developer, Joe Brescia, is attempting to build a luxury beachfront house on top of a burial site at Naue in Haena on Kaua’i. The people buried here are all women and children, laid to rest before anyone here had ever discovered Captain Cook. A tireless group of people has been holding vigil to protect the iwi for about three months now. They have tents and have been staying on the beach at the edge of the burialsite. Word has come that construction is supposed to begin tomorrow morning at 7 am. Supporters and allies will begin to gather at 6 am tomorrow to protect the site. For more information, please call Ka’iulani Huff at 808-346-0975 Thanks! Katy Rose346-7011

So many similar struggles are taking place, indigenous concerns locked in battle with global economic strategists and wealthy individuals that only seek to control and exhaust that we which they feel is personally and economically justified, a user pay society, elite life styles that shut out the common man and create a society that disenfranchises those that economically vunerable. Thus democracy under the dollar! Despite what trials, struggles or battles we face, despite the insumountable odds that may seem to be not in your favour and whilst knowing that your stand and fight is just, righteous and true! Take heart in this scripture i have found “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is fair, whatever is pure, whatever is acceptable, whatever is commendable, if there is anything of excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy-keep thinking about these things. Philippians 4:8 My thoughts to you who all, who struggle in this life!

Hey Guys & Gals,

Well , recently i have been quiet on the artistic front, my body has been given me Major Pain and so a physio is overdue!

Also i have just found out that i need a pair of glasses, for my short vision is going, but my long distance is fine - so i can still enjoy those sunsets! :) The reason i found this out is because i was experiencing these debilitating migraines that just sent me straight to bed - killa indeed! Every time i would hop on the computer, read, write, draw or paint - up would come the head ache! aarrrggghhhh!

So those with spectacles, monocles and pirate patches - i salute you and humbly join your insightful ranks, at least i will now look intelligent? :)

* those who are waiting on work? - just give a little time extra until i get those darn glasses, don’t worry it’s coming - thanx!

When I am in the Studio painting and creating or gardening i place my speakers in a prominant position and put the needle to the record or laser to the disc and play some of my favourite tunes to keep me in the mood!

My musical tastes are continually mellowing, though one thing remains a constant!

My love for the genius that is “The Sunday Manoa.”

The Sunday Manoa 3

The virtuosic ukelele & Guitar stylings of Peter Moon and the soulful strumming of Cyril Pahinui’s guitar, with that of Albert Kalima Jnr’s heart beat of a presence on bass guitar, formed the ground breaking Hawaiian band “The Sunday Manoa”.

The bands first formation and recording included singer “Palani Vaughan”, though he and Cyril Pahinui ( Son of Gabby Pahinnui - legendary Hawaiian musician ) would not figure in future recordings.

Their 2nd recording “Hawaiian Time” (which remains out of print), saw the inclusion of Alfred Pahinui, the brother of Cyril. After “Hawaiian Time” Peter Moon became the only original band member and ended up recruiting the talents “Roland & Robert Cazimero”, the new line up would prove successful and go onto create many Hawaiian Classics, such as the album ” GUAVA JAM”, which is now regarded as a influencial sound within the Hawaiian/Polynesian renaissance of the late 1960’s and 70’s .

The Sunday Manoa - Guava Jam

Guava Jam had embarked a new direction and motivation in Hawaiian Music, merging traditional sentiment with contemporary rhythms and sound, the accent of Hula drum and ipu heke amongst ukelele and Guitar melodies successfully incorporated the old with the new to inspire a generation.

The Sunday Manoa - Cracked Seed

The Sunday Manoa produced but only three Albums from this band line up, and though their musical journey as a trio was short, their endeavours have surely outlast the era they inhabited!

Their final Album included the popular track ” Hawaiian Lullaby” , release in 1973 it remains a favourite to fans a like. “The Sunday Manoa” were but a musical group of personal conviction and heart felt inspiration that touched and erged a generation of Hawaiians to see a future whilst embracing their past, a unique trio of musicians, that in my opinion has not been replicated since!

Think of all the childrens books, story books, periodicals, scientific and historical books you have read, scanned and taken glimpses at through your life!

I remember being captivated by lots of artwork, sketches and illustrations as a kid, to which i admit as a child some books i purely wanted for the pictures, some books i bought just for the covers, Conan the Barbarian, Edgar Rice Burroughs etc. I am sure many of you were the same. Certain images just draw our attention, cause our eyes to travel and become inspired or entertained at intervals amidst chapters and paragraphs. Though when we think about it, can we remember the names of those artists and illustrators? Whose work we so fondly looked upon.

I would dare say that, “we can not!”

One such illustrator is Charlie Harper, a prolific artist if ever there was! Sadly he passed away mid 2007 and with him took a talent that span 65yrs, a illustration style that many have tried to emulate.

Luckily for those of us that are left behind, the busy and industrious life of one Todd Oldham, along side of Mr Harper has produced an incredible volume of Charlie’s work! Most definately one of the most definitive publications to date!

available here >>>>>> AMMO BOOKS

I must admit , i can not remember many illustrators names? I have my favourites that i do remember, Bernie Fuchs, Frank Frazetta, Norman Rockwell and the like, though the list is surely short! I recall seeing Charlie’s work , though never put a name to them? in a world that is fixated on doom , gloom and destruction, charlie’s work is a breath of fresh air, air that many people are breathing in again - the exceeding joy and inspiration derived from the tone, colour, line and shape of Mr Harpers artistic perspective!

How much the richer are we for the lives of such illustrators as he!

I may of not know of Charlie’s name before, but i certainly won’t forget it now, just as his fan base has grown exponentially and this book spawned a new generation of Charlie Harper admirers.

What could be better then the colour and line of Charlie’s animal kingdom!

Not much says I!

Finally this book arrived on my door step, I have not finished reading it as yet, though am enjoying the images that accompany this volume of work, plus the perspectives and experiences shared within its pages of   Ta Moko practitioners and wearer’s of Ta Moko.

mau moko

Mau Moko: The World of Maori Tattoo
Authors: Te Awekotuku Ngahuia

In the traditional Maori world, the moko, or facial or body tattoo, was a sign of great mana and status. Male warriors wore elaborate tattoos on their faces and bodies; women took more delicate chin tattoos. After almost dying out in the twentieth century, Maori tattooing is now experiencing a powerful revival, with many young Maori wearing the moko as a spectacular gesture of racial pride.

Mau Moko is probably the most magnificent book ever produced about the moko, from pre-European times to the present day. It examines the use of tattooing by traditional and contemporary Maori and links it to other aspects of Maori culture. Gender issues are considered along with tattooing techniques both old and new. The book features case studies of modern Maori who have made a personal decision to be tattooed; the role and status of the tattooers; exploitation of the moko in popular culture around the world by figures such as rock singers and football players.

I recently read an article By BBC News Environment correspondent,David Shukman in Tuvalu. The issue is quiet bleak, Tuvalu’s future is questionable as is all of ours?
Indeed we are all connnected, what happens to a tiny island or atoll in the pacific or else where invariably effects us all!
I saw on television where it was stated by a scientist that we should not be alarmed by large issues, but on the contrary be riveted and scared by the smaller things that pass beneath our eyes and feet! Insects, small sea life, frogs, butterflies and the like!
When the small things die, life can not be sustained, we thinking we are so big and important find ultimately that our life is but a vapour, here one day and gone the next, unfortunately our short lives are impacting the earth and the smaller things that contain and perpetuate life!
It’s termed as a threat to global diversity, as the economic world races to a mono culture based on consumption, our natural diversity is paying the price for consumer addictions!

The worst thing that can happen during the 1980s is not energy depletion, economic collapse, limited nuclear war, or conquest by a totalitarian government. As terrible as these catastrophes would be for us, they can be repaired within a few generations. The one process ongoing in the 1980s that will take millions of years to correct is the loss of genetic and species diversity by the destruction of natural habitats. This is the folly that our descendents are least likely to forgive us.

- E.O. Wilson, 1985 I hope Mr Wilson words are not ignored, though sadly i find he will be vindicated in the end! For years those leftist green’s were shouted as crazy and disconnected, now every politician in the wake of Al Gore was to get in on the environmental act and still no acknowledgement of these crazy environmentalists being right in their outspoken rants, only speak of carbon trading this , crabon trading that, sign this protocal. attend this summit but stuff all happens, economics and politics has highjacked environmentalism and made it trendy, making us digest it through consumer packaging and encouraging that we can indeed continue in our materialistic ways and still help the future, garbage to all it! We are continually duped by politicians in out hope that just one of them will give a damn! click here to read of
